Kadriye Ortakaya, a 28-year-old activist from Istanbul, was shot dead on Thursday while allegedly trying to illegally cross the border into the Syrias Kurdish populated Kobane, which has been under the attack of IS. The young woman was among a group who attempted to forcefully cross the border before security forces fired into the air and used gas bombs to disperse the crowd and prevent the border crossing.It was claimed that security forces deliberately targeted the young female activist and shot her in the head, while the office of Suruc district governor refused the claims and denied any shooting during the incident.The woman had written a letter to her family and stated that she was going to Kobane to fight, and demanded from them to embrace her struggle, it emerged later. Ortakayas body was carried by female relatives and fellow activists, and transferred to Istanbul following a post-mortem examination at Forensic Medicine Institution. A YPG flag was wrapped around the activists coffin, and an Abdullah Ocalan
poster was placed on the funeral vehicle that took her to Istanbul.
